What the Letter gives you
The Letter provides a forum for Okno Group's analysts to review for our readers the broad trends, changes and opportunities in the East European region. Our staff writers and guest authors use their expertise and experience to give you the essentials of developments in the region -- by presenting the big picture and necessary details in a clear and concise fashion.
In the Letter, we try not just to describe events to our readers, but to explain why events take the shape they do and what their impact is likely to be. Analyses in the Letter pay close attention to the special features of economies in transition and to the lingering effects of communism and the planned economy in both business and politics.
Our articles cover the investment outlook and important policy issues in individual countries, review specific sectors, examine case studies, and survey the regulatory environment. Coverage of privatization developments, elections and other leadership changes are regular features of the Letter. Each issue also includes: business and economic news briefs from across the region; an update on currency and financial developments; and detailed economic data for both a featured country and selected regional indicators and exchange rates.
In autumn 1996, we introduced Environment & Health, a new supplement to the East/West Letter focusing on policy analysis and industry news in the environmental and health sectors of the region. In January 1998, Okno Group launched our electronic monthly - Environment & Health Online. E&H Online provides up-to-date information about policy developments and industry news for the environmental and health care sectors in the region. Recent articles in the Letter have examined the Russian banking sector and the tangle of Russian tax policy. Other pieces took a close look at the troubled middle age of the transition process in the Czech Republic, and assessed the motives and methods of privatization across the region several years on. Finally, the Letter has followed recent elections in Romania and Bulgaria and these nations’ belated steps toward dramatic political and economic change.

Subscription information
As noted above, Okno Group is not currently accepting subscriptions to the Letter. A new version of the Letter, now to be merged with the print Environment & Health, will be relaunched in late 2000.
