In the autumn of 1996, Okno Group launched a new, specialized publication: Environment & Health. Originally a supplement to the respected East/West Letter, Environment & Health reflects Okno's longstanding interest in and experience with environmental issues in Central and Eastern Europe; it also takes advantage of our growing expertise on health matters and the health-care sector in these countries.
Our aim in publishing Environment & Health is to bring together hard-to-find information and informed analysis of key events, policy issues, and industry news in the environmental and health sectors. The magnitude of the environmental and health-related problems that these nations face is hard to exaggerate. So is the importance of tackling these problems for the future political and economic stability of the region. Not only do environmental and health-care problems represent quality-of-life issues, but they have important effects -- separately and together -- on prospects for macroeconomic stability and growth.
While the problems are huge, opportunities for building solutions have been growing rapidly in recent years. Western nations and international organizations have been offering financial and institutional support, and East European policy-makers have come a long way in learning what the problems are and how they might be addressed. One result of this greater attention is that a wide range of opportunities have opened up for Western businesses with expertise in these sectors.
With Environment & Health we keep readers with an interest in these sectors both well informed and well advised. Okno's seven-year experience publishing the East/West Letter as a general business and economic policy journal provides a strong foundation for the newly merged Environment & Health. The journal will continue to provide the kind of policy-oriented analysis that our readers have come to expect. It will also continue to focus on the policy environment for business with case studies, regular company and industry data, and selected news briefs from its sister publication, Environment & Health Online.
